Dover, Del. – Dagsboro resident John Buffington recently won $10,000 playing POWERBALL® with the Delaware Lottery. The 72-year-old has lived in Delaware for more than 12 years, retiring in the state after a previous career in Baltimore, Md. where he worked at the Social Security Administration. The husband, and father of one, claimed his prize on May 7, marking his first big win through the Lottery.
Buffington remember the events well. “While shopping at the Super G in Millville I noticed that they sold Lottery tickets,” he said. “After I finished shopping I decided to buy some POWERBALL® tickets, three to be exact.” Sure enough, one of those happened to be a winner. Dover, DE – A 67-year old retiree from Wilmington recently claimed a $30,000 prize from the Delaware Lottery. The former heating and air conditioning technician turned can thank one of the four HOT LOTTO® tickets he purchased before the Feb 21 drawing.
The winner, who wishes to remain anonymous, is a regular Lottery player with several wins under his belt, but the HOT LOTTO® payout is the largest amount he’s won in his many years of playing. Dover, DE – Bear resident Dana Mangini has claimed one of the $25,000 top prizes for the Delaware Lottery’s CASH VAULT instant game. Mangini, a custodian in the nearby Colonial School District stepped forward with the ticket on Feb. 4, saying the winnings come at a great time. A mother of two, Mangini has played POWERBALL® in a pool with co-workers for years, and plays instant games on her own. Mangini’s individualism paid off to the tune of $25,000.
Although Mangini usually prefers Bingo when she’s in the mood for a scratch-off ticket, she picked up the $10 CASH VAULT ticket on a whim that day. “I don’t really have a favorite,” she says. “When I walk in to the store I just buy whatever makes me feel lucky. I’m always drawn to new tickets”

Dover, DE – A father/daughter pair has stepped forward to claim a $200,000 POWERBALL® prize from the April 30, 2008 drawing. The 70- and 43-year-old winners, who wish to remain anonymous, both live in Newark and say they’re elated with the news. “We don’t play big, but we play every week,” said the school teacher, who accounts for one half of the winning tandem. “It’s amazing that our persistence has paid off.”
The family moved to Delaware approximately 15 years ago and said they’ve enjoyed POWERBALL®, MULTI-WIN LOTTO, and assorted Delaware Lottery instant games for many years. “Of course you never know if you’re going to win, but we’ve always had fun playing,” said the 70-year-old retiree.
The daughter remembers well the happy day. “I saw the numbers in the newspaper over breakfast so I knew we’d won something, but I had no idea how much the ticket was worth. I just went to work like always.” Meanwhile, her father was on the case.

One member of the group recently stepped forward to clam a $10,000 prize, and said the group was thrilled with the news. The 61-year-old group representative hails from Millville and works at Allen’s Hatchery in nearby Seaford.
Originally from South Carolina, the winner (who wished to remain anonymous), said that she was stunned to discover the good news. Dover, DE – Rita Branun, of Newark, and Charles Hodgson, of North Ocean City, Md.,
were recently selected as winners in the Delaware Lottery’s Deal or No Deal instant game second-chance trip drawing. The lucky winners, along with up to three guests of their choosing, will soon be enjoying a travel package to Hollywood that could turn their millionaire dreams into reality.
Branun, a 49-year-old Delaware native, plans to take her daughter and granddaughter on the five-day, four-night trip. “Multi-Win Lotto is probably my favorite, but my best win was $2,500 in a Pick-4 drawing before this,” said the homemaker. “I buy tickets all over and I enjoy lots of different games.”
Still, Branun was shocked when the Lottery Office contacted her with the good news. “I couldn’t believe what I was hearing at first,” she recalled. My husband told me to hang up. He thought it was a joke.”
Hodgson was equally surprised by the good news. “I’ve played the Delaware Lottery since way back when,’ he said “but this is the first time I’ve won more than $500. My wife already told everyone where she works.”
The 69-year-old retiree says he is familiar with the Deal or No Deal television show and has a strategy in mind if he makes it onto the program. “If I get to a certain number I’ll take it. I hope I get to $1 million, but I have a number in mind that I’d be happy with.”
Branun says she’s also watched the show several times. “I like my odds. I’m a bit of a risk taker, so Deal or No Deal is right up my alley.”

Dover, DE – Delmar resident Brian Wilkins struck it rich on Jan. 30, taking home a $10,000 POWERBALL® prize. The Delaware native worked in the engineering department of the state’s Department of Public Works for years, and said he began playing the Delaware Lottery because it gave him something “to hope and dream about.” With the big win, at least one of Wilkins’ dreams has finally come true.
Although he is not a regular lottery player, Wilkins has won some smaller prizes in the past. He says the recent win has convinced him to become a more regular player.
Wilkins recalls purchasing the winning ticket late Wednesday, but says he did not discover he’d won until checking for the winning numbers online on Friday afternoon. “I must have checked it over five and six times,” Wilkins remembers. “We were both at home and I told my wife right away. She was a little panicked, as we were about to take our son to guitar lessons, but after she settled down she quickly and realized what great news it was we were both really happy.”

A regular lottery player, the recent prize marks the fourth time the lucky 53-year-old has claimed a significant prize. The 33-year-old Newark resident who purchased the ticket is a frequent Lottery player, typically purchasing $10 worth of POWERBALL® chances. He vividly remembers the events leading up to the big win.
“We were driving over to a friend’s house but we didn’t have any money,” says the Delaware native. “My fiancé had a couple of instant game tickets that we knew were worth $24 and when I went in to cash them I figured I’d look through my pockets to check the other tickets we had. The lucky player phoned the Delaware Lottery’s Player Information Line shortly after the Dec. 31 drawing to check her ticket numbers (1-800-338-6200 in Delaware and 302-736-1436 out-of-state). In fact, she checked several times. “I just couldn’t believe it the first time I heard it,” she remembered. “I must have called five times.” She was a winner every time.

The 35-year-old Delaware native pocketed $7,500 (after Federal withholding taxes) thanks to a Dec. 29 drawing, and he says the big win will change his life.
The winner, who wishes to remain anonymous, struck it rich by purchasing a single POWERBALL® ticket at his local Acme food store. “I usually just buy one, and I guess I was lucky enough that that’s all I needed to buy,” he said. Maybe that’s because he had some karma working in his favor.
“I usually play numbers like my family’s birthdays and my anniversary,” the man recalls. “Two months ago, though, I ate at this Chinese restaurant and I won playing the numbers that were in my fortune cookie. They really were lucky after all.”
The project manager discovered he’d won by calling to check the numbers Dec. 30 after the previous night’s drawing. “When I found out I’d hit it for $10,000 I just let out a ‘Woo-Hoo!’ Then I obviously told my wife right away.”

“I’m not a real frequent player, so this is quite a treat,” said the winner. “One of the reasons I started playing was because of a Lottery ticket retailer right next to a favorite Chinese restaurant of mine, The Crownery.”

Dover, DE – The holidays bring a lot of surprises, and Peggy Wilkins of Pittsville, MD got a big one on December 19, 2007 when she won a $10,000 POWERBALL® drawing prize. The manufacturing worker, who has been playing the Lottery for about eight years, said this is her first time winning such a large amount, and she could not have been more excited.
“I just didn’t believe I’d won at first,” said Peggy. “I had to go around the counter to look at the computer screen with the cashiers and see the readout for myself.”
The first person Peggy called was her husband, who she phoned from her car in the store’s parking lot. They each then started getting in touch with other family members to tell them the good news.

Dover, DE – Private First Class Stokesbury is used to training for emergency maneuvers in the First State and beyond. A member of the Delaware Army National Guard, the 18-year-old was recently called into action to secure her $7,500 MONOPOLY instant-game top-prize winnings.
In just her second time ever buying a scratch-off ticket, PFC Stokesbury struck it rich. “I actually got into playing (The Delaware Lottery) because a friend of mine,” she says. “He plays all the time but hasn’t won big. I might be his good luck charm from now on.”

 Dover, DE – Raymond Shearer is Delaware’s latest $10,000 POWERBALL® winner, and the 63-year-old says the late-November win will help him enjoy the holidays more than ever this year.
“First I’m going to pay a few bills with the money, but I expect it to just make our holiday season a little nicer overall.”
A long-time Delaware Lottery Players Club member, Shearer discovered he’d won after checking his ticket against the Lottery-provided winning-numbers e-mail. “It was 12:30 a.m. when I looked at my e-mail [for the drawing results] that night,” he recalls. “My wife was already asleep, but I woke her up to tell her. She was pleasantly surprised.”

Dover, DE – An Ardentown woman is $50,000 wealthier after claiming a top prize in the Delaware Lottery’s Super Cash Spectacular instant game, and the lucky winner says the money couldn’t have come at a better time. Jackie Nicklas’ win came on the final day of her boyfriend’s cancer treatments, and with her 27-year-old’s wedding coming up in July; Nicklas says the cash is like a God send.
“When I saw ‘Go to Lottery office’ on the store’s lottery ticket machine I was in disbelief,” Nicklas recalls. “I left my glasses case there in the store I was so shocked.”
While Lottery games are nothing new to the 52-year-old Terry Children’s Psychiatric Center nurse, the big win was a first.
“I buy Lottery tickets every day and I’ve been playing since the Delaware Lottery started, but I’ve never won anything like this before,” says the state employee. “I like Pick 3, Pick 4, scratch offs, Multi-Win Lotto and Powerball®, so I guess you could say I like them all!”
Nicklas relies on a set number series for other Lottery games (mixing birthdays, the numbers in her mother’s address and other significant digits), but this time the $20 card and a coin did all the work.
“I already know what I’m doing with the money,” says the Wilmington-area resident. “First I’m buying a Volkswagen Rabbit with a sun roof. Then I’m redoing the kitchen and living room – without taking out any loans. This win is really going to make everything going on in my life much easier.”

Dover, DE – A Kent County truck driver should have no problem at the toll plaza the next time he rolls through, thanks to the Delaware Lottery. The 23-year-old man’s $150,000 win, which represents his $200,000 POWERBALL® prize minus federal tax withholdings, should also cover more than a few trips to the gas pump.
The lucky winner, who wishes to remain anonymous, started playing the Lottery last year but already has a few wins to his name. “I just started playing because I was walking around with some extra money,” he says. “I typically buy $5 to $10 worth of tickets at a time now.”
The anonymous winner names POWERBALL® as his favorite Delaware Lottery game, and the recent payout is unlikely to change his mind. “My parents were the first people I told about the win,” recalls the Delaware native.
He is sure the prize will put him ahead of the game. “The first thing I’m going to do with the money is pay off some loans,” he says. “It will feel great to be debt free.”

Dover, DE – A New Castle County woman recently found her way to the winner’s circle thanks to the Delaware Lottery’s officially licensed NASCAR® Instant Game. The 51-year-old entered her originally non-winning ticket through the Lottery’s Web site to win a trip to a 2008 NASCAR® sanctioned race as part of a complete prize package.
Marilyn P. R., who preferred not to disclose her full name, calls herself a long-time Lottery gamer. “But I only play games where there are second chance drawings and I’ve done pretty well for myself that way,” she says. “I think most people don’t take the time to re-enter, but it’s pretty easy to do it online – and it’s free. I’ve won some great prizes over the years by doing that. I’ve even won a NASCAR® jacket that I’m going to wear to the race!”
The postal worker’s good fortune has convinced some skeptics around her that the Lottery truly awards prizes to real people. “My mother and my co-workers say I make them jealous because I’m always winning,” Marilyn says. “They also tell me they’re going to start playing because now they know it’s the real thing.”
The race trip package includes a three-night trip for two to the winner’s choice of any NASCAR® sanctioned race for the 2008 season. It also covers round-trip airfare, hotel accommodations, ground transfers, $500 spending cash, and a racetrack VIP package including pre-race pit passes, or hospitality tent admission or an additional $500.
“When (the Lottery official) called to tell me I’d won I was worried at first because I couldn’t find the ticket,” according to Marilyn. “I was still crying a little and having a hard time reading the numbers, though it’s not a bad way to be woken up on a Friday morning.”
Marilyn remains undecided about which race she’ll attend but says she’s leaning towards a race in Daytona, Fla. “I’ve already been to California, but I haven’t been down to Florida before.”

Dover, DE – A Wilmington man’s recent POWERBALL® win proves you can leave the racetrack happy even if your horse doesn’t find the winner’s circle. James Green’s work with racehorses at Delaware Park Racetrack might give him a leg up when it comes to picking the ponies, but even he’s unlikely to have ever won $10,000 this easily.
Green has played the Delaware Lottery for years, but he says the biggest prize he’d netted before the Nov. 3 drawing was $100. He cites POWERBALL® and PLAY 3 as his favorite games. “I just started playing because I was hoping to get lucky,” says the 64-year-old. The recent win surely reinforced those hopes, as Green says he’ll definitely keep playing.
The Wilmington resident discovered he’d won when checking the winning POWERBALL® numbers in the Sunday newspaper. He didn’t immediately realize the extent of his good fortune. “At first I thought it was just a couple of dollars,” says Green. “I was excited to find out it was $10,000.”
The trainer already knows what he wants to do with at least part of his newfound wealth and, fittingly, it involves horsepower – of the automobile variety. “I’m thinking about buying a new car,” Green says of his plans for the $7,500 he’ll take home after federal withholding taxes are deducted from the winnings. He also expects the prize money to help him pay off bills and generally improve his day-to-day life.

Dover, DE – A Georgetown resident finds himself $200,000 richer (minus federal taxes) thanks to a friend’s advice and a winning POWERBALL® ticket.
The 38-year-old U.S. immigrant, who makes his living as a knife sharpener, is a regular patron of the Delaware Lottery and says he began playing when a co-worker suggested the idea. That same close friend was also the first person he told about his windfall after the Oct. 13, 2007 drawing.
Citing POWERBALL® as his favorite game, the winner (who wishes to remain anonymous) says this is easily the largest prize he’s ever won. If he needed any reason to keep playing, he need look no farther.
The married father remembers first being happy and surprised before starting to jump for joy in the store where he scanned the ticket. Five of the six winning numbers (21, 30, 34, 36, 49, 42) were accurately selected by the Quick Pick feature, which missed only the red POWERBALL®.
For now the winner has no plans for the money other than bill payments, but he also expects the big win will make life for him and his family much easier.

Dover, DE – Maybe there’s something in the water. The third Newark man in seven days recently stepped forward to claim a Delaware Lottery prize of at least $10,000. The 54-year-old building contractor joined the trio thanks to an Oct. 12, 2007 POWERBALL® drawing.
The Delaware native (who wishes to remain anonymous) has won several small prizes in the past, but says this is his first time taking home a major purse. “It’s great to win such a big prize all at once. I absolutely plan to keep playing the same exact way.”
The lucky winner says he’s played the lottery for 15 years, purchasing three POWERBALL® tickets every Wednesday and Saturday on the way home from work. He named MULTI-WIN LOTTO as his other favorite game and says he always relies on the Quick Pick feature to generate his numbers.
The $10,000 winner discovered his good fortune by checking the numbers in Saturday’s newspaper. “I still had no idea how much I’d won though,” he recalls. “I thought I was seeing things at first and I said, ‘I’m coming [to Dover] tomorrow to pick up that check.’”
Most of the winnings will go directly into the bank, according to the Newark man, who purchased his ticket at a Country Maid store in Newark.

 Dover, DE – A Middletown man whose weekly shopping list includes $10 worth of POWERBALL® tickets was recently rewarded for his tenacity. The winner, who wishes to remain anonymous, picked up $10,004 in a Sept. 19 drawing and says he won’t abandon the ritual any time soon.
The police officer makes a point to stop Wednesdays and Saturdays “every single week” for POWERBALL® tickets (and a coffee) on the way to work. The Delaware native knows the Schoolside Getty’s morning cashier so well he thought it was a joke when the employee said he’d won. “I thought he was kidding at first. We always play around so I didn’t believe him right away. I’ve never won anything before!”
Although the 46-year-old usually picks some of his own numbers for other lottery games, he relies on the Quick Pick feature for POWERBALL®. He may not have come up with the five lucky numbers on his own, but he does know exactly how he’ll use the newfound cash. “We just put up a lot of money on my son’s wedding and this will help us recuperate from that.”
The father of two says he’s enjoyed POWERBALL® and other Delaware Lottery games for years. “I just thought it was a neat idea. I got into the POWERBALL® game when it was introduced and I’ve been playing ever since.” Although he’s never taken home any substantial prizes in the past, the anonymous winner says the promise of a big reward always kept him coming back. “Now it’s getting me to start thinking about doing the Power Play®.”
