Wednesday’s POWERBALL® Jackpot Drawing Jumps to $450 Million

The Delaware Lottery Encourages Players to Play Responsibly

(DOVER, DE) — Wednesday night’s POWERBALL® has reached an estimated annuity jackpot of $450 million—the fourth-largest in POWERBALL® history, and the sixth-largest in the U.S., according to Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) officials. The largest in POWERBALL® history was $590.5 million, won by a Florida woman in 2013.

“With a POWERBALL® jackpot this large, many people have an increased desire to play the Lottery,” said Vernon Kirk, Director, Delaware Lottery. “The Delaware Lottery encourages players to play responsibly and to spend only what they can afford without compromising necessities.”

With no jackpot winner from the drawing that took place Saturday, January 2, 2016, the jackpot was raised from $355 million to the current $450 million. If the $450 million jackpot is won this Wednesday, the winner could opt for a cash option payout of $275.4 million. This is the eighteenth drawing since the most recent POWERBALL® grand prize winner on Nov. 4, 2015.

The winning numbers from Saturday’s non-winning jackpot drawing were 5, 6, 15, 29 and 42. The POWERBALL® number was 10 and the Power Play® number was 2. Although the jackpot remains, more than two million players won more than $20.8 million in cash prizes. The Delaware Lottery reminds players of the importance of checking their numbers carefully for other opportunities to win.

In October 2015, the POWERBALL® was redesigned to offer better overall odds of winning a prize. Players now choose their first five numbers from a set of 69 (previously 59) white balls and their Powerball from a pool of 26 (previously 35) red balls. POWERBALL® jackpots still start at $40 million and the game’s second prize for matching the first five numbers but missing the POWERBALL® is still $1 million. The game’s third-prize level is now $50,000 (previously $10,000) for matching four of the first five numbers and the POWERBALL®. In addition, the Power Play® added a 10X feature when the jackpot is $150 million or less. 2X, 3X, 4X and 5X will be in play when the jackpot is higher than that.

“The redesign of the game means bigger jackpots while upping some other significant prizes,” said Kirk. “So just purchasing one ticket can go a long way.”

POWERBALL tickets sell for $2 per game, and with the Power Play® option POWERBALL® costs $3 per game.

The Delaware Lottery joins other lotteries across the country in support of responsible play.
