37 Coworkers From Millsboro’s First Class HVAC Win $50,000 Playing POWERBALL®

(DOVER, Del.) — Debbie Gordon, a 60-year-old office manager at First Class HVAC in Millsboro, Delaware, organized 37 of her coworkers to take a chance in the Wednesday, Aug. 23 POWERBALL® drawing, which stood at an impressive $700 million. This was the first time that the employees played the Delaware Lottery as a group—and they must have had beginner’s luck because they won $50,000 after correctly matching four of the five white-ball numbers, plus the POWERBALL®.

Gordon’s husband—and good luck charm—purchased 74 tickets for the group at Super G in Millsboro. Each person bought two tickets at $2 each, and one turned out to be a winner.

“I made copies of the tickets and left them at the office so that everyone could check the numbers on the night of the drawing,” Gordon said. “I didn’t believe it at first—I was so excited. I sent a mass text to everyone involved!” Afterward, her phone wouldn’t stop buzzing.

The majority of the players were from Delaware and a few were from Maryland. Gordon told Lottery officials that her fellow employees at First Class are “one big family.”

One of the technicians called her and asked, “Are you teasing us, Ms. Debbie?” Gordon told him, “I’m not a jokester. ...I love you guys too much to make this up!”

When Gordon claimed the prize at Lottery Headquarters on behalf of the group on Aug. 24, she told Lottery officials that she didn’t know what her coworkers were planning to do with the money, but she plans to put her share toward a house that she recently purchased. Gordon said she doesn’t know if the group will keep playing, but she would like to play again—and try for a bigger piece of the pie.

The winning numbers from the Aug. 23 drawing were 06, 07, 16, 23 and 26. The POWERBALL® number was 04, and the Power Play number was 4x.
