Newark man played $50,000 winning POWERBALL® number twice
Dover, DE — A 61-year-old Newark man asked his son to fill out a few POWERBALL® playslips for the January 18th POWERBALL® drawing. The man, who wished to remain anonymous, went to Malin’s Market in Newark to play the numbers on the playslips but when he arrived, he realized he only brought enough money for three plays. The man purchased one ticket with three plays and returned the next day and unknowingly purchased an identical ticket by accidentally using the previous day’s playslip.
Incredibly, each ticket resulted in a $50,000 win by matching four numbers and the POWERBALL® for a combined win of $100,000 before taxes.
“When I returned to the store (Malin’s Market) after the drawing, I couldn’t believe I had won when I scanned the first ticket,” the man said. “A few hours later, when I scanned the second ticket and saw it had also won, I was shaking. It was unbelievable.” After taxes, the man ended up taking home $76,000.
“What an incredible win,” said Vernon Kirk, Director of the Delaware Lottery. “It’s always great to see Delaware Lottery players win, but even better to see them win twice.”
When asked what he was planning to do with his winnings, he said he planned to pay off some bills and put the rest into savings.
The man claimed his prizes at Lottery Headquarters on January 21, 2020.
A POWERBALL® ticket sold at Cypress Wine & Spirits in Milford for the January 18th drawing also ended up being a $50,000 winner. The winning ticket has not yet been claimed at Lottery Headquarters. Check your tickets today, you may have a big winner.
POWERBALL® drawings are held Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10:59 p.m. Tickets are $2 per game. POWERBALL® with Power Play® tickets are $3 per game.
Players can use a playslip to select five white numbers from 1 to 69 and one red POWERBALL® number from 1 to 26, or they can use Quick Pick and let the computer randomly select their numbers. Fore more information, visit delottery.com
